Brothers, Scripture doesn’t mince words: a renewed mind is non-negotiable for navigating the forge.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)
We’ve covered the core tools—immersive Scripture, relentless prayer, disciplined meditation. Today I’m handing you another weapon most men overlook: nutrition.
Your brain is part of the temple. Fuel it with garbage, and the renewal stalls.
Ever try to lock in on the Word for more than ten minutes only to have thoughts scatter like dry leaves? Prayer time derailed by random noise in your head? That fog isn’t always spiritual attack—it’s often fuel failure.
Science backs what common sense already screams: what you eat directly forges—or fractures—your thinking.
Diets heavy in ultra-processed foods (UPF) and added sugars are linked to:
- Up to 28% faster global cognitive decline (overall thinking and processing speed).
- Up to 25% faster drop in executive function (planning, decision-making, attention).
- Disrupted memory formation and recall—making Scripture stick harder.
- Reduced gray matter volume, hitting memory, emotional regulation, and clear cognition.
- Significantly elevated risk for dementia, including Alzheimer’s.
Verify these in the Fitness Resource Guide.
The culprits? Industrial junk engineered for addiction and shelf life:
- Carbonated soft drinks, energy drinks, sugary beverages (cola, fruit punches, “healthy” juices).
- Packaged snacks: chips, crackers, cookies, candy, chocolate bars, savory/sweet bites.
- Sweetened cereals, breakfast bars.
- Mass-produced breads, buns, rolls (additives, emulsifiers, hydrogenated oils).
- Ready-to-eat/heat meals: frozen pizzas, microwave dinners, instant noodles, pre-made burgers/hot dogs/sausages.
- Margarines, industrial spreads, fake butters.
- Sweetened/flavored yogurts, ice cream, processed desserts.
Men, this hits us especially hard. High UPF intake drives belly fat accumulation—which ramps up cortisol overproduction, feeds insulin resistance, and boosts aromatase activity in fat tissue, converting testosterone (our drive hormone) into estrogen. Yikes. Lower T, higher E, softer edges—exactly what the enemy wants in a warrior.
And don’t think you’re dodging it. Latest CDC NHANES data (2021–2023):
- ~55% of daily calories for Americans (age 1+) come from UPF.
- ~62% for youth (1–18).
Adults hover around 53–54%. Over half the fuel in most men’s tanks is sabotage.
You grab the drive-thru burger and fries at lunch, pizza on the way home, cereal and toast to start the day, a “healthy” granola bar in between—and bite by bite, you’re dulling the very blade God gave you to discern His will.
This hit me like a hammer in recovery: food isn’t comfort; it’s fuel. Garbage in, garbage out. Rocket fuel in, high performance out—clearer thinking, sharper decisions, less belly, lower long-term dementia risk.
We’re commanded to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind—and might (Deuteronomy 6:5). Sluggish thinking and foggy focus steal from that “might.” Poor fuel dishonors the temple and limits availability when the King calls. This post is the wake-up strike. Next one delivers the fix—practical steps to re-fuel right without excuses. See the Fitness Resource Guide for sources on cognitive impacts.
Own it, brothers. Step into the fire. Fuel the forge. Emerge sharper, stronger, more devoted.
Pete is Out.
